What it means
Since January 2017 the sector added 34,600 jobs while the metro as a whole added 248,400; 14% of the metro's net job growth in that span was in health care and social assistance. Its share of jobs went from 12.5% to 12.8%.
The count covers jobs located in the metro area, including hospitals, physician and outpatient offices, nursing and residential care, home health and social assistance. It does not include the many health care company headquarters jobs that BLS classifies in other industries, such as management of companies or professional services, so it understates Nashville's health care industry as people use the term.

Figures are BLS Current Employment Statistics estimates of all employees on nonfarm payrolls, not seasonally adjusted, published in thousands and shown here as whole numbers. Because they are not seasonally adjusted, compare a month with the same month a year earlier rather than with the month before. The newest month is preliminary (marked P) and BLS revises it the following month; each March BLS re-benchmarks the past years to unemployment insurance records. Health care and social assistance is NAICS sector 62; BLS does not publish health care alone, or hospitals, for this metro.
